A good selection of art can help to express your personality in a particular space. Just like anything when it comes to design, art is subjective, and your art selection will depend on your personal taste. Whats your Art Style?
Whether you’re traditional, transitional, modern, contemporary, mid-century modern, bohemian, or anything in between, your art selection will reflect your interior design style. As discussed, the art will be your statement piece and inspiration around which you design the space. This makes selecting your furniture much easier when you have a direction and palette to base your selections. Of course, there may be a time where you already have all the furniture in your room selected. In this case, you will be working to make your art compliment your furniture, and not the other way around. You should still search for that statement piece that will unify your space into a cohesive look.
Selecting the Right Piece
We recommend taking pictures of your room from all angles and bringing fabric swatches or throw pillows when you’re out shopping so you can best match your colors and tones. The scale of the art is extremely important when selecting the correct sized art for the space. People have a tendency, for one, to select undersized art that is quickly dwarfed by the room as a whole. One of my favorite tips for figuring out what size will work is to use painters’ tape to outline the dimensions on the wall. This helps tremendously in being able to actually visualize the scale on the wall and if you need to reevaluate your sizing.
Layering in Other Elements
When selecting art for a particular room, it is important to consider what pieces you have in your surrounding spaces. It’s often best to select different types of accent pieces and layer them throughout your decor to avoid turning your home into a mini art gallery. We love layering in mirrors, animal mounts, and something architectural to add dimension and to make the design feel much more organic. It is important to have a good mix of these different accent pieces to make your space impactful and fluid.
A Gallery Wall
Now, if you have a very large space you want to fill with art, a gallery wall might be just what you need. A gallery wall is a great way to play with different pieces that all work together instead of relying on a single, massive piece of art. This is a great option if your taste is more retro or mid-century modern. My personal favorite pieces for a gallery wall are composed of those with minimalist brush strokes and abstract figures. Gallery walls are also a great option for displaying any art that you’ve collected through the years if they have the same or similar style.
